Food for thought

Yesterday, I was reading a blog post and the topic was:

‘How to leave your day job and start doing what you really want’.

Everyone seems to be asking this question, at least in my circles.

The post began something like this:

Why do you get out of bed in the morning and why should anyone care?

I can’t help but feel a little slap at the last part of the sentence 🙂

But as some of our commentors so eloquently stated in Mondays’ post about transportation woes, i.e. people aren’t usually considering your thoughts or experience.

Beginning with the above stated assumption re: your personal happiness.

Let’s also include: Maybe they care if there is some benefit to be gained for caring.

Now ask yourself:

Why is that information relevant for defining my Happiness or the WHY factor in my life?

That was a little convoluted but if your still here, thank you!

First, Why do YOU get out of bed in the morning?

I get out of bed because…

-My eyes opened.  I figure  I’m still breathing, might as well give the day a shot!

That is only partly true.

-I have job?

-I suppose a friend might want to hear from me?

-The bills are coming, regardless?

-I might get hungry?

None of those reasons are profound in any way.

I found it surprisingly difficult to think of  really good reasons to answer this question.

Although I’ve muddled through most of this post, I think that experience of discovering the WHY, is the point. It’s hard work and it might not come very easy. As I’m typing I’m still discovering.

Your WHY, has to be compelling enough for you to believe and act on it.  Your belief and WHY, will get the it done.

Why do you get out of bed in the morning? Why should anyone care ?

And strike the last, point.

It doesn’t matter what anyone thinks. Your ‘WHY‘, has to be enough for you, and then you will get it done.

Alright, that’s it!

  1. I get out of bed in the morning happy that I can.
Then I like to think how can I make myself proud today before foot hits floor. Think about stuff that I could have done better yesterday and vow to do them that way today. That’s usually good enough a reason for me – plus the little bathroom visit that motivates faster movement….
I love mornings. And I know a good 20 or so people who would be happy if I continued to get out of bed for many more mornings to come!

  2. @Donniee, that’s great and thank you for sharing! I like the “what can I do to make myself proud” and “correcting the mistakes from the day before”

  3. Reflective post, Briggster! The ‘Whys’ are individualized as to the reasons we get out of bed and face the world. Sometimes the whys are controlled by others. While the human that is me groans at the thought of doing things I don’t want to, I know they have to be done because I want to have certain experiences…and they’re not going to to come me if I’m laying on my back…unless I were a prostitute! No shade.

  4. It’s a blessing to be able to get out of bed.. A lot of people didn’t wake up this morning. To question why you’re up is to question you’re reason for being.. in my opinion. You woke up.. does it matter whether you did or not (thank God you did though right)? I think the question should be: Alright I’m up! Now what am I going to do to make this day count. That is more profound than questioning why should you get out of the bed..

    Say to your self:
So.. I’m up. I’m going to make this day: _____________ <fill in the blank

  5. I wake up because of work, bathroom, Teverico and coffee! Other than those requirements and vices, I’d sleep in!
